In Classical Greek Mythology, Echo was the name of a wood nymph who aided in Zeus’ affairs by distracting his wife Hera with long rambling conversations whenever she tried to catch him in the act. Hera eventually learned of this betrayal and was furious with her. In revenge, she cursed Echo’s voice so that she could only ever repeat the words last spoken to her.

While struggling with this fate, she ran into a handsome young hunter, Narcissus. He spurned her romantic advances because of his infamous infatuation with his own reflection. In Echo’s dejected heartbreak she aimlessly wandered through the canyons and caves of the countryside until she withered and slowly disintegrated, leaving behind only her rippling voice responses in those cavernous spaces.
